At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her world changed in an instant when she was stolen away and held prisoner by the malevolent vampire Dragos. After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well—the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.

Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos’s most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he’s hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he’ll go to end Dragos’s reign of evil—even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne’s tender heart.
Deeper Than Midnight is a story about discovery.  Many of the characters discover more about themselves and their pasts.  Corinne discovers that an act of betrayal led to her abduction and that as a result of that, she cannot live the life she once wished would be possible. I can't even being to think of the horrors that Corrine had to endure while in captivity.  Because she is a breedmate, a human with special abilities that makes them able to breed and become mates to The Breed, she was sought after by Dragos for his evil experiments.  These experiments were talked about in previous books in the series and Corrine was a part of them.  She doesn't talk about what happened to her in detail, but the reader can pretty much figure out on their own what happened.  I had a hard time connecting with her character and I think it's because Corrine didn't get the opportunity to have a full life like some of the other female characters in the series.  Her's was taken from her and I think this is why she and Hunter are able to have a connection.  They were both victims of Dragos and are able to give each other the insight due to what they both went through while imprisoned.

I know I wasn't the only one that was looking forward to Hunter finally getting his book.  Because of his past there were many questions regarding what he went through and I have to say that I loved finding out more about him as he discovered what happened in his past. He took the initiative to find out more about what happened to him and although the conclusion to this may not have been what he wanted to find out, he was able to help Corrine and be there for her when someone from her past appears.  I felt that their connection to one another became stronger because of this.  Now I have to discuss Hunters virginity.  I was so looking forward to reading him loose control his first time, but it almost seemed as if he was the perfect lover.  But at the same time, I guess it had to be this way because this was became Corrine's first time as well.  I am glad that they were both inexperienced and was able to discover this part of themselves together and act on it.

Another character that discovered more himself was Chase aka Harvard.  He really loses control in this book and finds himself doing things he never thought he would do.   I was so sad to read what he was experiencing because he seemed to be out of control.  I was quite surprised to see that his storyline was such a big part of this book and while I know that his story is the next one in the series, I felt that the reader didn't get the opportunity to connect with Hunter and Corrine because of this.  At the same time, I don't know if anymore could have been written for those characters.  I am looking forward to see what will happen in Chase's story now next because his actions at the end of the book could have this series go in many different directions.  It'll be interesting to see what The Order will do next because of this new development.

I'm giving Deeper Than Midnight a rating of:

  2. I also love this series. Since I haven't begun reading it - yet as soon as I saw your words (Many of the characters discover more about themselves and their pasts. Corinne) I stopped. Hope you don't mind but I don't want any heads up here :). Thanks for the post.

  3. I am a big fan of this series, though I am a bit behind, I need to read Brock's book as well as Hunters but I was one that was really excited for Hunter getting a book. Sounds like based on your review Hunter and Corrine are perfect for each other and I can't wait to read this one.

  7. Great review... I felt very similar. the first half of the book was a snooze. Since I really wasn't one that was waiting for Hunter's book, I didn't mind that the story took a back seat to Chase! and Draco!

    Thanks for the review!
