Received book for review from publisher.
Deep in the New Mexico desert there is a secret race on the brink of extinction—the pure-blood shapeshifters of the Dragonstar clan. And they have one last, desperate hope for survival…

Quinn Maguire is a powerful Dragonstar healer at a tragic loss, unable to cure the insidious disease killing off his people. Yet even in such dire circumstances the conservative Quinn is secretly disapproving of the alternative: Dr. Jasmine Kane, enlisted by the head of the Dragonstar clan to help abort the virus. She is a wild card. She is an outsider. She is human.

Decked out in black leather and a tough attitude, Jasmine clashes with Quinn in more ways than one. And when destiny chooses her for his Mate, he doesn’t know whether to rejoice or rebel. Because while Jasmine makes him burn hotter than any woman—dragon or human—ever has, their differences make a relationship impossible.

But when a rival infiltrates the clan and attacks Jasmine, Quinn becomes desperate. Jasmine is now the first human to be infected with the disease—and Quinn must do everything he can to find a cure, and save the woman he has grown to love.
A disease is killing members of the Dragonstar clan one by one and it's members are worried.  Quinn Maguire leads the research team in trying to get to the bottom of what is happening but just can't figure it out.  A human doctor that specializes in blood diseases is called in to help much to the dismay of Quinn.  The dragon clan has survived for many of years by keeping their secret hidden.  But at this point they need all the help they can get and Jasmine Kane is the best of the best.  She travels to New Mexico after she receives a call from a friend that her help is needed.  She is intrigued by what is happening there and hopes to help in any way that she can.

I love the scene when Quinn and Jasmine first meet each other.  They don't know who the other person is and it takes place in a bar.  Right away they are attracted to each other and before you know it they can't keep their hands off one another.  I also love that all of this takes place at the beginning of the book.  There is nothing like hot scenes happening right at the beginning.  What a way to start something!   When they realize that they have to work together they can't believe it and Quinn has a hard time with Jasmine being human.  He realizes that she is his mate and keeps it to himself.  What he doesn't keep to himself is his attraction for her and soon those around him realizes what Jasmine means to him.  Jasmine is one smart cookie and figures out exactly what the clan is.  She has a hard time wrapping her head around it at first, but soon accepts it and realizes how much she wants to find out what is effecting the clan.  She cares for Quinn and is sad that he lost a family member from the disease.  She knows how much it would mean to him to help him prevent the lost of any more loved ones.

I thought the storyline was interesting and the pace of the story flowed well.  Overall I thought the book was just okay though and I don't know if I would read the next book in the series.  I felt that there could have been more action happening between the clan and their rival. I think it would have added that extra kick to the storyline.

I'm giving Hidden Embers a rating of:
