Kylie McAllister has it all until her world is shattered by the death of her husband, Jackson.  After a year of grieving, Kylie uses the proceeds from Jackson's life insurance to purchase a plantation home on the outskirts of New Orleans to begin rebuilding her life with their daughter, Abby.  Confirmed bachelor, Ryan LaCroix, has no intentions of settlingdown with anyone, let alone his best friend's widow, but somehow Kylie and Abby find their way into his heart.
After discovering an old Ouija board in the attic of her new home, Kylie unwittingly opens a cosmic door to an incubus who pretends to be the dead husband she is so desperately struggling to let go of.  She falls deep under his potent spell of delicious sex and malevolent obsession while he gradually drains her life to fortify his own.  By the time she realizes he's an impostor, she is powerless to stop him.  Together, with Jackson's subliminal guidance and the help of a kind voodoo practitioner, Ryan and Kylie wage a fight for her life against the evil entity.
Giving Up the Ghost is the 1st PNR release from Melissa Ecker.  It deals with a woman named Kylie and her life after the death of her loving husband Jack. With the support of family and friends she tries to live life day by day. But she having a hard time coping and ties her best for the sake of her daughter.  One day she finds a Ouija board and uses it to try to talk to husband.  Once it starts to respond to her, she begins to sense that Jack may be visiting her.  She keeps this a secret from family and friends especially when it escalates to her having sex with the spirit.  During this time, she begins to spend more time with Jack's best friend Ryan and they soon realize that they have feelings for one another.  Once Kylie decides to be with Ryan, the spirit gets violent and she soon realizes that Jack would never be that way.  She's going to need lots of help in the battle that is coming because it's going turning into a battle for life or death.

I've read Melissa's other works and liked them a lot, but I had a hard time with this book.  I was unable to connect to any of the characters in this story.  The characters felt one dimensional and the storyline just didn't do it for me.  I felt that it was lacking substance and I need that in order to have a good reading experience.  I did continue to read the book because I was curious about the incubus storyline and where it was heading, but it didn't excite me like I thought it would.  I wanted more action when it came to the big showdown.   I also wanted more romance between Kylie and Ryan.  There relationship felt rushed at the beginning and was over with before you knew it.  Kylie was falling under the spell of the incubus and pushed Ryan away which had them spending less time with one another.  I also felt that Kylie and Ryan were meant to be all along.  They were initially attracted to one another, but both settled for less because Jack got to her first and became her rock.

I have to say that Giving Up the Ghost was not for me, but it may be for you.  Below is the KLB Virtual Journey Schedule so please stop by one of the other blogs on their date to see what they have to say.

  1. It is so interesting - so far I have read reviews all over the place for this one - I guess we all have those subjective likes and okays when reading a story. I am reading one now that I know is not a bad story or poorly written, but I am forcing myself to finish it because I am like a dog with a bone and just want to find something that will hook me. Thanks for your efforts and sharing.

  2. I am following the tour around the web. Interesting that you didn't like it. I think it sounds really intersting.
