Ideas

One of the most common questions writers are asked is ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’

Ideas come from the very grains of imagination.  Everyone, everywhere has ideas.  What are you going to do tomorrow?  Idea.  What movie do you want to see?  Idea.  Where do you want to eat?  Idea.

I get ideas from everywhere and anywhere.  Sometimes they come to me as I am drifting off to sleep.  Sometimes they come to me while I’m researching.  Sometimes they come to me while I’m reading the newspaper.

And sometimes the characters themselves give us ideas.  I’ll be writing and my hero might give me the idea to go save his brother!  More often then not, these ideas need to be explored or at the very least considered.  We do that in our everyday life.  When our daughter says ‘Mom can I have the car?’, we consider it.  ‘Mom can you buy this for me?’, we consider it.

Ideas for stories can come from anywhere.  A scene, a character, a question.  The only time ideas are hard to find is when you need a new idea for that next book.  J

Whether I’m reading a newspaper, sunbathing, or writing, I keep my mind open to those new ideas.

  2. I can't put into words the excitement I feel when I find an author who writes medieval stories. Now to become the owner of all of them. :)
