Although he keeps company with a vampire and a were, human Shaman Caleb O’Flare can hold his own. But neither his psychic ability nor his healing powers can help his sexy-as-hell teammate, Wraith—a ghost with no memory of her human existence, one who cannot experience touch without pain.

No wraith has managed to exist past its tenth year, so Wraith’s time is about to run out. She wants only two things before accepting her fate: to learn her human identity and experience one night with Caleb. Willing to risk any amount of pain, Wraith propositions him. But when a sign of impending death appears on his chest, Wraith sacrifices her own needs on the chance that sex with her could kill him.

Caleb doesn’t understand Wraith’s change of heart but refuses to let her push him away. As the team travels to Los Angeles to investigate a series of crimes in the feline community, Caleb sets out to prove to Wraith that pleasure and love are worth any risk, including death.
After reading book 1 in the Para-Ops series Chosen By Blood, I wanted to pull at the hair on my head.  Why you ask?  It's because I wanted to read book 2 Chosen By Fate right away and I knew it was going to be a long and agonizing wait for me.  The main characters Wraith and Caleb O'Flare have this AMAZING tension in the 1st book and when I saw that book 2 was their story I couldn't wait to read more about them.

Virna DePaul does not disappoint with the continuation of this series as we get the opportunity to get to know these characters better.  Wraith is one very complex character because she is dead and can't remember her previous life or what caused her death.   If she does not figure out the reason of her new existence as a wraith, then she ceases to exist.  What she does know is that she only has a short time before this will happen and she wants to give in to her attraction to Caleb and be with him.  I love how these 2 characters pretend to not be attracted to one another when everyone around them can tell that they want each other bad.  Like rip your clothes off bad!   They are one smoldering couple and their scenes together are hot.  Whether they are threatening to kill each other or ripping off each others clothes, it's all good and I was one happy woman while reading this book. They would do anything for one another even if that means pushing the other away to keep that person from getting heartbroken.  We all know that love is worth fighting for, and these two do a lot of fighting to get what they want.

I'm giving Chosen By Fate a rating of:

There are several backstories going on at the same that include the other members of the team.  Since they are all investigating what is going on with the Feline community, we get to see what else is going on with Knox and Felicia and Dex and Lucy.  The one thing that I like most about this group of characters is that they have each others back and that is what being a team is all about.  They may not always agree with one another, but will support each other to the end.  I like the direction this series is taking and can't wait for book 3 to learn more about Dex and his past.  Until then, I'll probably re-read the 1st 2 books.  They are that good people!

Make sure you stop by the blog tomorrow for my Author Q&A with Virna DePaul that I did with Danielle from Lush Book Reviews!

  3. Oh, that sounds good! Sadly, I haven't read either and I'm on a major, major budget crunch right now. *sigh* I really hate budget crunches. I don't suppose I could borrow books 1 & 2 could I? :D
