Author Interview: Samantha Young Q&A!

I am so excited to welcome author Samantha Young to the blog!  If you haven't had a chance to read any of her books, I highly recommend you do so.  I love the 1st book in her On Dublin Street series, On Dublin Street, and was happy to have the opportunity to ask her some questions about what will happen next!

Welcome to Hanging With Bells, Samantha.

1. I loved On Dublin Street and was so happy to hear that there would be more books in the series!  Were you surprised by its success and had you planned to have more books in the series?

Thanks so much! Yes, I was absolutely blown away by the response to On Dublin Street. I knew there was scope for more books but it was really the positive response from readers that gave me the confidence to continue the series.

2. What is about your series that makes it different than other contemporary romance series?

I think its setting is a little different. There isn’t a great deal of contemporary romances set in Scotland with modern Scottish heroes. Moreover, so far the series really deals with reluctant heroines with issues rather than the very popular reluctant hero.

3. Down London Road is book 2 in the series.  Tell us a little about it?

Down London Road follows the story of Johanna Walker, a young twenty-something who takes care of her younger brother. Her devotion to her brother affects most aspects of her life, including the men she dates. Concerned with giving her brother more security and a better future than she had, she dates men with money. That is until she meets Cameron MacCabe, a brooding bartender who, after shaky first impressions, takes the time to show Jo that there is so much more to her than even she realizes.

4. Will there be more books in the On Dublin Street series?

I’m working on book three in the series at the moment, due to be published by NAL in January 2014.

5. What are some of your favorite books that you have read and some of your favorite authors?

Ooh, we could be here forever but I’ll try to keep it short. Favorite books include The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter, The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts) by Stacia Kane, Hopeless by Colleen Hoover, Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins… okay I’ll stop now because I could go and on…

6. Thanks Samantha for stopping by the blog and I’m looking forward to reading more of your books!

Thank you for having me!

Johanna Walker is used to taking charge. But she’s about to meet someone who will make her lose control....

It has always been up to Johanna to care for her family, particularly her younger brother, Cole. With an absent father and a useless mother, she’s been making decisions based on what’s best for Cole for as long as she can remember. She even determines what men to date by how much they can provide for her brother and her, not on whatever sparks may—or may not—fly.

But with Cameron MacCabe, the attraction is undeniable. The sexy new bartender at work gives her butterflies every time she looks at him. And for once, Jo is tempted to put her needs first. Cam is just as obsessed with getting to know Jo, but her walls are too solid to let him get close enough to even try.

Then Cam moves into the flat below Jo’s, and their blistering connection becomes impossible to ignore. Especially since Cam is determined to uncover all of Jo’s secrets …even if it means taking apart her defenses piece by piece.

Make sure you check out book 1 in the series On Dublin Street as well!  I'm providing a link to my review here, if you're interested in reading it.  Like I said, I really enjoy Samantha's writing!  Thanks for stopping by the blog today!

The Folly At Falconbridge Hall Blog Tour!

Thank you for inviting me to your blog. As The Folly at Falconbridge Hall is set in the late Victorian era, and features a Christmas scene, I thought I’d say a little about how the Victorians spent their Christmas.

A Victorian Christmas

At the beginning of the 19th century, Christmas was hardly celebrated and many businesses did not even consider it a holiday. However, by the end of the century, it became the biggest annual celebration and much like our Christmases today.

The transformation happened quite fast, and came from all sectors of society.

After her marriage to the German-born Prince Albert, Queen Victoria introduced some of the most prominent aspects of Christmas. In 1848, the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the royal family celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree, a tradition that was reminiscent of Prince Albert's childhood in Germany. Soon every home in Britain had a tree bedecked with candles, sweets, fruit, homemade decorations and small gifts.

Victoria and Albert gathered around the Christmas tree with their children.

Santa Claus first made an appearance in British society during Queen Victoria’s reign when the wealthy middle class generated by the industrial revolution changed the face of Christmas forever. Father Christmas was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, normally dressed in green, a sign of the returning spring. The stories of St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas in Holland) came via Dutch settlers to America in the 17th Century. From 1870, Sinter Klass became known in Britain as Santa Claus with his bag full of gifts and toys distributed by reindeer and sleigh.

Inspired by Charles Dickens Christmas Carol published in 1843, the wealthy gave money and gifts to the poor at Christmas.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day became holidays. Boxing Day was so named because the poor opened the boxes containing gifts and money from their wealthy benefactors. The railways allowed those now living and working in the cities to return to the country for Christmas.

With factories came mass production, which produced less expensive games, dolls, books and clockwork toys than the handmade variety. Children of poorer families might have found an apple, orange and a few nuts in their Christmas stocking, which became popular from around 1870.

Turkeys originated from America and had been in Britain for hundreds of years before the Victorian era, but along with chicken, they were too expensive at the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. Roast beef was traditional fare in northern England and in the south goose was eaten. Queen Victoria and family in 1840 enjoyed both beef and a royal roast swan or two. By the end of the century, most people feasted on turkey for their Christmas dinner.

The "Penny Post" was first introduced in Britain in 1840 by Rowland Hill. The idea was simple, a penny stamp paid for the postage of a letter or card to anywhere in Britain. This simple idea paved the way for the sending of the first Christmas cards. Sir Henry Cole tested the water in 1843 by printing a thousand cards for sale in his art shop in London at one shilling each.
Tom Smith, a London sweet maker in 1846 invented crackers. The original idea was to wrap his sweets in a twist of fancy colored paper, but this developed and sold much better when he added love notes (motto's), paper hats, small toys and made them go BANG!

Carol Singers and Musicians "The Waits" visited houses singing and playing the new popular carols:
1843 - O Come all ye Faithful
1848 - Once in Royal David's City
1851 - See Amid the Winters Snow
1868 - O Little Town of Bethlehem
1883 - Away in a Manger

Here’s part of the scene in The Folly at Falconbridge Hall, when Vanessa’s uncle comes to call:
On Christmas Eve, snow gathered in great drifts, softening and muffling the landscape. It was pretty, and a white Christmas would have been enjoyable but for the big hole in their lives, Julian’s absence had made.
When Vanessa visited the kitchen to stir the sixpences into the plum pudding, she found it decked out with holly. Cook was busy making mincemeat and wassail and preparing oyster stuffing for the goose. The house was filled with good cheer, which made Vanessa miss Julian even more. She busied herself organizing the staff bonuses and gift boxes and buying Blythe’s presents, which were hidden in her wardrobe. Now that everything was under control, she had time to reflect on how small their family was. Would there be more children around the table in coming years? She prayed it would be so.
Vanessa and Blythe dressed the tall pine Christmas tree in the corner of the drawing room. Bright red stockings hung on the fireplace mantel. The house had taken on a festive air, as if willing it to be a good Christmas. Vanessa doubted even Blythe was fooled by it.
A carriage came down the drive. Moments later, the knocker was sharply rapped.
“The Earl of Gresham, my lady,” Johnson announced.
Stunned, Vanessa clambered to her feet, holding a colored globe as the well-dressed man entered followed by a footman, his arms full of wrapped gifts.
“Uncle William, how nice to see you.” Vanessa hurried to kiss his cheek.
     “And you, my dear.”
Her uncle dismissed his servant and accepted the offer of a hot cider to warm him.
She introduced Blythe to her uncle. He smiled and nodded at her.
“The tree still looks a bit bare, Blythe. Could you seek out Mrs. Royce and ask her to find more tinsel? And then go to the nursery, I’ll be up directly.”
Blythe curtsied sweetly and left the room. “A pretty child,” he said, gazing after her. “Her mother was a friend of my wife’s.”
     “Was she?”
“I shouldn’t speak ill of the dead.”

Guest Post & Giveaway: Breaking the Rules by Cat Lavoie tour!

You're the One That I Want: Best Friends in Love
By Cat Lavoie

I love romantic comedies. I've sat through countless viewings of movies like Love, Actually, The Holiday and Bridget Jones's Diary and never grow tired of them. There’s nothing better than watching two (sometimes clueless) people who are clearly meant to be together as they navigate the inevitably bumpy road to true love. And when these two people happen to have a shared history, it can make things even more complicated.

In my novel, Breaking the Rules, the two main characters are lifelong best friends whose platonic relationship changes after an emotional goodbye hug turns into a passionate kiss.

Today I'd like to share my Top 5 Favorite Romantic Comedies about best friends who fall in love. Action!

13 Going on 30 (2004)

I love that—like Roxy and Ollie—Jenna (Jennifer Garner) and Matt (Mark Ruffalo) are childhood best friends. They have a connection that can survive anything—even time travel and extreme diva behavior. The last ten minutes of this movie always brings me to tears. And that scene where Jenna convinces Matt to do the Thriller dance? Pure awesome.

Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! (2004)

A small town girl (Kate Bosworth) wins a date with a famous actor and they hit it off. When her best friend (Topher Grace) realizes that she's the one for him, he must compete against the Hollywood hunk to get the girl. Fun fact: I started writing Breaking the Rules shortly after seeing this movie and—in my early drafts—Roxy was actually named Rosalee, like the character played by Kate Bosworth. This is a very sweet movie. And Josh Duhamel is the hunk. Enough said.

Made of Honor (2008)

When a woman (Michelle Monaghan) asks her best friend (Patrick Dempsey) to be maid of honor at her wedding, he realizes he loves her and wants to stop her from going down the aisle. I love this movie because part of it takes place in Scotland, which is a place I've been wanting to visit for years (that accent! those kilts!) and because I love the chemistry between the two main characters. Fun fact: in Breaking the Rules, Roxy and Ollie joke about being each other's maid of honor and best man. Pure coincidence but it made me enjoy this movie even more.

The Switch (2010)

Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) and Wally (Jason Bateman) are best friends. When Kassie decides to have a baby on her own through artificial insemination, Wally is less than enthusiasthic because he's secretly been in love with her for years. After getting drunk at Kassie's Insemination Party, he does something that will forever change his friendship with Kassie. I loved this movie. The interaction between Wally and Kassie's son is especially hilarious and heartwarming. And, of course, you can't help but want Wally and Kassie to get it together and realize that they are meant for each other.

My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

My list wouldn't be complete without this movie. Julianne (Julia Roberts) realizes that she is in love with her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) when he announces that he is marrying Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) … and the race is on to stop the wedding. Definitely a classic. And a great example that a happy ending isn't always the one we expect.

Blurb:

When twenty-seven year old Roxy Rule’s best friend and roommate accepts a glamorous new job overseas, she expects their relationship to continue as it’s always been—carefree and easy—until they share a heart-stopping kiss moments before his departure. Overcome with mixed emotions, she fights the urge to over analyze the situation and resumes back to her normal life in New York City, working for an intolerable boss at a dead end job, creeping further and further away from her own dreams of becoming a professional chef.

While things become more complicated between her and Ollie, Roxy is sure that nothing can come between two lifelong best friends—not even mild jealousy over a thriving career or a silly little kiss that meant nothing. In fact, it was such a meaningless and forgettable kiss that she convinces herself that it’s not even worth mentioning to her fiancé, although it is all she can think about.

Roxy’s already topsy-turvy life only gets more complicated when her sisters Steffi and Izzie suddenly become her roommates. Steffi is six months into a pregnancy she refuses to discuss and Izzie is in the throes of a premature midlife crisis. Roxy tries to take control of her career, her love life and her sisters – but can she really handle it all? And can the Rule family keep it together – or break under the pressure?

Cat Lavoie was born in the small town of Jonquière in Québec, Canada. At the age of nineteen, she packed up her things (mostly books) and moved to the big city of Montreal where she currently lives with her tempestuous cat Abbie—who is both adorable and quite possibly evil.

An incurable Anglophile since her university days where she studied English Literature, she can often be found daydreaming about her next trip to London. Since she’s an expert at the art of procrastination, Cat is easily distracted by cooking and home improvement shows—even though she’s not particularly good at either.

Cat grew up watching soap operas and legal dramas and—had she not decided to be a claims analyst by day and write chick lit by night—she would have probably become a designer suit-wearing lawyer. Or a character on All My Children (which is what she really wanted to be when she was twelve).

Cat is not sure whether she’s a geek or a nerd—and is afraid she might be both. Breaking the Rules is her first novel.

STORY EXCERPT

“I saw you in the garden today,” Zane said, his mind drenched in the memory of watching the woman he loved fall into the arms of another man.

Tiffany froze, her hand still outstretched to reach for a glass in the cabinet beside the refrigerator. He couldn’t help but notice the sudden shiver that chased along the curve of her spine, settling in her shoulders.
Zane’s body trembled with the vibrations of anger. What had once lingered in his gut had sprung out to every nerve in his body. Grinding his teeth together, he sat in the shadows of the kitchen at the corner of the bar. He’d been there for hours wondering why Tiffany had allowed another man to touch her, and why she sought comfort from a man who wasn’t him.
Then he flipped the switch, turning the kitchen light on, revealing himself. “I saw you kiss Ryder,” he blurted out, not carrying if anyone else in the house heard.
She locked eyes with him. “Zane,” she breathed. “I don’t know what happened.” She leaned against the counter at her back, looking defeated. “I’m so confused.”
He frowned. At least she hadn’t tried to insult him by denying it. “Confusion doesn’t make your mouth kiss someone else’s. Desire does that, and you clearly feel something for Ryder.” He was so angry, he wanted to hit something. He wanted to kick the shit out of Ryder for crossing the line. Ryder had no right to touch Tiffany. She belonged to him and him alone.
Tiffany’s eyes rounded. “It’s not like that,” she argued, stepping toward him, the counter separating them. “I was practicing my magic, and he saw me.”
Zane arched a brow, the corner of his mouth tugging upward in a lopsided grin. “So you bribed him into silence with a good tongue fucking?”
Tiffany’s mouth formed a giant O. “No, I swear. That was not what I intended to happen.”
Zane studied her for a long moment, heat blazing from his eyes. He dropped his head into his hands. “Maybe it’s because you’re not a wolf,” he muttered softly.
“What are you talking about?”
Zane rose from the barstool, rounded the counter, and stalked toward her as if she were prey. His nostrils flared as he took in her scent. “I’m talking about you being my mate and still finding compulsions to be with another man.”
“What?” she gasped, her eyes opening wide. “How could I be your mate? I’m not even a wolf.”
He crowded up against her, forcing her to stare up at him. “No, you might not be a wolf, but all the instincts are there, and had you been a lycan, I would’ve marked you the first night we were together. I would’ve marked you so damn hard everyone would know you belonged to me.” His tone was cold and rough.
She shook as he closed in on her. His arms formed a cage around her. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
He slammed his fists on the counter beside her, and she jumped, closing her eyes. “I didn’t want to frighten you.”
A thundering growl emerged from deep within him. The emotions surging through his body were so unlike him. He felt out of control like the wild beast of his wolf was scratching at the gates and he couldn’t stop it from getting out.
Jealousy’s a bitch.
She opened her eyes. Her bottom lip quivered as tears filled her gaze. “But you let me think less of what this means to you. You let me think we were just sleeping together.”
Rage flooded him. “I let you think?” He released a guttural laugh. “Damn it, what a joke.” He took hold of her face, his hands diving into the lose strands of her soft, blonde hair. “I’ve been in love with you for as far back as I can remember. You are so much more to me than sex.”
“Zane,” she said his name on a gasp. Tears began to stain her cheeks. “I don’t know what to say.”
His gaze lingered on her face. His heart hammered like a freight train. She didn’t know what to say, he repeated in his mind a dozen times. If she didn’t immediately profess her love for him in return, then she didn’t love him at all.
“You don’t have to say anything, Tiffany.” He released her, lowering his gaze and stepping away from her. His claws lengthened, and his wolf screamed. His mate had rejected him. The worst form of punishment any lycan could face.
“Tiffany, it’s best that you go to your room and lock the door.” He exhaled hard. “Call for the others.”
“Why?” she asked, fear looming in her eyes.
His gaze shot to hers, his fangs biting into his lips. His voice was distorted as he explained, “If you don’t, my wolf is going to claim you, fucking and marking you in such a way you will never be the same.”
She sucked in a breath. “Zane, your eyes…they’re silver.”
Zane grasped the counter top at his side, arching his back as a deep, primal cry sprung from his lips. “Go, Tiffany!” he growled. “Go now before it’s too late!”

ADULT EXCERPT
His hands were no longer restraining her wrists. Now they were touching her, moving down between her legs. One hand cupped her pussy while the other massaged her buttocks. She moaned as his fingers swirled gently over her sensitive clit. She gasped as his finger entered her, and she immediately parted her legs, giving him better access.
Another finger.
“Oh, God,” she cried, her nails clawing his back. The fever of release was close. “Don’t stop. Please don’t stop.”
Her mind went blank. Her entire body hummed with an energy she hadn’t felt before, and it was all because of Zane. He was doing this to her, made her feel crazed with lust.
His breath on her neck, she trembled, captivated by his touch. He brushed his lips over her tingling flesh. More chills of excitement washed over her. He felt so good. Everything about him had her begging for more.
Unable to stop herself, she reached down and began stroking his hard cock, marveling at the size and velvety softness of the skin that surrounded it. Groaning, he dragged his tongue over the crook of her neck, and instantly she wanted to wrap her legs around his waist.
As if hearing her thoughts, he lifted her from the floor, and her legs immediately circled his hips. His firm cock pressed between her damp folds, and her head fell back as his shaft brushed over her throbbing clit. She arched her hips, hoping he would soon be buried deep inside her.
“You feel so amazing,” he rasped in her ear. “I want to be inside you. I need to be inside you.”
Was he hearing her thoughts? Reading her mind?
Again his hips moved forward. She hissed as the thick head of his cock breeched her entrance. His body froze, holding her against him. His breath was hot on her skin.
“Tiffany,” he whispered, his lips gliding over her throat and up to her chin. “I’m going to ask you only once, so I beg you to tell me the truth.”
His cock sank a little deeper. The pleasure was almost too much to bear. “Whatever you want. Just ask me.” She squeezed him tighter, digging her fingernails deeper into the tight muscles of his back and shoulders.
He took possession of her mouth, greedily kissing her. His body was still locked in place like a statue. She dug her heels into his rear, hoping to encourage him to thrust forward, but he didn’t.
“Are you a witch?”
“Yes,” she answered breathlessly. “Now stop stalling. You’re killing me.”
She felt a smile on his lips as he nuzzled his face against her ear. Slowly, he stretched her, another inch. “Oh, God,” she said, gasping as the pressure built inside her. He was driving her insane. She’d never survive another moment without him. “Please, Zane, I need you.”
* * * *
Zane bucked his hips forward, teasing her with another inch of his cock. She clung to him, her arms clasped tightly around his neck and her legs anchored around his waist. His fingers kneaded the flesh of her hips. Wiggling, she tried to slide down the length of his shaft, eager to impale herself upon it.
But his unyielding hands held her steady. He was denying her what she so obviously wanted, and he wasn’t sure how long he could continue to resist the temptation. Everything inside him commanded that he satisfy her, his mate. He knew that if he did, he’d get nothing from her but a fuck. He had to push her to the edge, make her drunk on desire and captivated by the teasing pleasure he alone could give her.
He pressed a hand between them, seeking out her sensitive sweet spot. When his fingers parted her flesh to find her clit, her pussy was slick with her desires.
Pleased to find her so aroused, he grinned, nipping at her earlobe. Slowly, he moved his lips down the delicate curve of her throat, suckling gently. His elongated fangs brushed over her skin, ready to mark her. He marveled at the fact that her skin tasted of warm vanilla sugar. A flavor he would crave for the rest of his life.
He groaned as he ever-so-tenderly massaged her clit. When his finger began to caress her, she arched her back, bringing her breast up to his mouth, but she quickly moved back and sought out his lips. Tiffany grew ravenous for his kiss. Their tongues molded together, tasting each other as if starved for affection.
Pushing back, she cried, “Please, Zane. I need you.”
“Say it again,” he demanded, holding her tight up against him. “Tell me you need me. Tell me you want me.”
“Oh, God, yes,” she replied breathlessly. “I want you. I need you.” She trembled in his arms.
He pressed another inch inside her. “Your magic is setting me on fire. Your touch, your scent, it’s maddening.” Another inch. “Are you more than a witch?”
Her eyes opened, gazing at him as if she’d had too much to drink, dizzy and confused. She shook her head.
“Tiffany,” he whispered against her ear. “Don’t stop touching me.”
The moment she no longer caressed his back, kissed his lips, he felt cold and the connection that buzzed so electrifyingly between them faded.
“I’m scared,” she confessed, her eyes wide and glistening.
Zane held her tight. “Don’t be. I’m here for you. I’ll always be here.”
He meant it. He would never be parted from his mate, and she would no longer keep secrets from him. They were now one, and soon she would know that as well. He drove his cock the rest of the way inside her, and she gasped. Her face was aglow with unrelenting passions.
“I’m never letting you go.”

She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother's secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide. Halo of the Damned is a horrifying tale that weaves research together with suspenseful twists and turns

Excerpt:

The next day, Kim packed up her own drawing of her mother’s carved wall, the scroll, and the piece of metal. Her excitement put her in a giddy mood. Once she was parked and in front of Loyola’s entrance, Sandra met her in the foyer and escorted her back to the Arts and Science College. Sandra took Kim to their lounge and introduced her to six other professors who were equally interested in seeing her finds. All of them specialized in fields that had to do with the ancient world.

Kim began with unveiling her own copy of the symbols she drew from her mother’s basement. “I appreciate all of your attention. Can anyone tell me what this is, and even possibly what it means? Each symbol was copied down in the order it was etched into the wall,” Kim said.

One professor immediately took the paper and made a copy. This made Kim uncomfortable. He asked, “Where did you find this?” “Again, none of that matters,” Kim defensively repeated. Her daughter’s omen chimed throughout her brain. The man intuitively put up her defenses. “Doctor Nrogbi’s English is somewhat limited. He’s not trying to be pushy or rude,” Sandra explained.

“This is Angelic script, also known as Adonite language, alphabet of the Ark, or even Enochian. It’s the first written language of this world. Angels used it to communicate with God. The first humans also used it before the Fall,” Doctor Nrogbi lectured. “Before what fall?” Kim asked, very confused. How could Maria have known all of this? “Before Adam and Eve sinned. Before they were kicked out of Eden. It pre-dates Hebrew, Sanskrit, Aramaic, and other ancient languages. It’s very sophisticated and difficult to translate. These symbols look like a key, invocation, or lyric.

The Secret World of Alaina Downs Blog Tour!

Title: The Secret World Of Alaina Downs
Author: Rebecca Rynecki
Genre: New Adult/Fantasy
Number of Pages: 252

When Alaina stumbles into a world that she only thought existed in her mind, she is understandably a little bit freaked out. Who wouldn't be? Characters that she had written down years ago are walking, and talking, and telling her that she is the only one who can save the princess and the kingdom of Isleen. Um...okay. As she travels down to the southern kingdom with Sir Gabriel, a really hot knight, she falls off horses, has an interaction with an evil witch, gets attacked by a sea creature, and even falls from lust into love.

Excerpt

Gabriel growled softly. “I want to be with you!” he shouted.
“How?! I'm leaving to go home in the morning. You just said that you're not coming with me., so you're never going to see me again in a few hours!” she replied, her voice cracking on the last word.
    “Stay. Stay here with me.”
She swerved around back to face him. “What?”
He threw his arms up. “Stay here. Stay in Isleen.”
Alaina chuckled mirthlessly. “I can't! My family is not here, my whole life...no.” Alaina shook her head. “I wouldn't have anything to do here. What would I do? I was only brought here to...you know, save Isleen, right? I don't have anything to do!”
“I know that we could be together,” Gabriel said softly.
    “Together? Together as what?”
    He licked his lips. “Everything.”
“Everything?” She shook her head as tears started to run down her cheeks. “I can't. This isn't my world. I...I've been attacked by crocodile sea serpent things, there's half men, half bird...creatures! There's no underwear!” Alaina laughed. “I know how dumb it sounds, but, I need those little things in my life back. I can't...I can't just sit around while you go off and do knightly things. I can't.”
    “You could do more!”
“Like, what?” she spat. “I'm not royalty! What would I be doing except for waiting for you?”
    “Right,” he whispered.
    “I'm sorry,” she sniffed.
“Yeah.” Gabriel wiped the tears away from his eyes. “Me too.”
“So...I mean...you're really not coming with me...are you?” Alaina asked.
He slowly shook his head. “No. And, you're not staying here?”
“No.” Alaina swallowed. “I should...” she gestured towards the castle,  “I need to get some sleep.”
“I can go with-” Gabriel started to offer.
“No.” Alaina lifted her hand up to stop him. “That would not be the best idea right now.”
    “Right.”
“I told you that I wasn't like her,” Alaina whispered.
    “What?”
“The woman. The woman who took advantage of...” She shook her head. “You know, I'm tired of feeling rejected.”
Gabriel reached for her, only to have her step away. “I'm not-”
“You're not?! I left David. I left my boyfriend because it turned out that he couldn't fully commit tome, at least, not in the way that I was hoping.” Alaina watched as he stilled in front of her, silent. “I made the mistake of falling for you. It was silly of me to believe that just because you're from...here, that you would be different.”
“You told me that I was,” he said, hushed.
Alaina snorted. “Well, turns out that I was wrong...wasn't I?”

Fornarina Affair Blog Tour! Guest Post & Giveaway

A Tour of Rome by Ellis Drake, author of The Fornarina Affair

Hey, Ana here! A few months ago my thesis advisor called offering me the opportunity to travel to Rome FOR FREE, stay in a billionaire's mansion, and spend the entire day up to my armpits in art. Did I say yes? What do you think?*

During my stay in Rome, I visited some fabulous and romantic places. Want to travel along through the magic of the interwebs? Here are the top five highlights!

Trastevere--Just southwest of the conservative area around the Vatican, Trastevere is a charming neighborhood that dates to the 6th century BC. What makes it charming? It's full of tiny alleys, quaint bars, restaurants, and shops, and a cathedral with an awesome mosaic that dates to the 13th century. You can also visit--and eat in--La Fornarina restaurant, which is in the very building that Raphael first saw his true love, Margerita Luti.

Borghese Gallery--This is one of the greatest museums in Rome! It has tons of paintings by Caravaggio, sculptures by Bernini, that sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte (by Canova--my favorite sculptor, FYI), and a copy of Raphael's La Fornarina by his best student, Guido Reni. All in a historic house surrounded by one of the most famous parks in Rome. The zoo nearby also has weirdly interactive animals, and is very cool to visit.

Spanish Steps--There's always something going on at the Spanish Steps: street art, food sellers, hawkers and tourists, it's the place people go to see and be seen. It's also surrounded by the poshest shops in Rome and historic homes like the Keats-Shelley House. The Spanish Steps have a long and romantic history, which is probably why this is where Gregory Peck accidentally-on-purpose met Audrey Hepburn in the movie Roman Holiday.

"The Typewriter"--The National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, or Il Vittoriano, was built to commemorate the first king of united Italy and contains Italy's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its own museum. The Romans call it the Typewriter or Wedding Cake because that's kind of what it looks like from the ground. They're not too fond of it since its construction destroyed part of Capitoline Hill and a medieval neighborhood, and it's kind of pompous; but you can get great views of Rome from the top.

Vatican "Secret" Archives--Okay, you can't actually visit this as a tourist. You need to be a scholar and request materials and then be approved and it's a whole drawn out deal. But wouldn't it be cool to go? I never imagined when I was geeking out over this while reading Angels & Demons that some day I would be there, but thanks to my professor's invitation I got a chance! Also, the men in the Swiss Guard are weirdly hot.

Of course, there are TONS of more sites to visit while you're in Rome; that's why they say everyone returns to the Eternal City, because there's always more to see. What are some of your favorite sites or the places you're most excited to see?

*Bonus: The billionaire's son was super cute, and so was his chauffeur.

The Fornarina Affair

A recent art history graduate, Ana Moreno is thrilled when one of her former professors invites her to Rome to research a newly discovered painting by Raphael. But how does making an appointment to see a piece of art lead to murder? That's what Ana wonders when she discovers the dead body of a curator in the famous Borghese Gallery.

Between glittering balls, sunny Rome, the archives of the Vatican, and romantic Florence, Ana not only has to solve the mystery of Raphael's greatest love affair, but also a murder--or she may never make it out of Rome alive.
